MANAGING VISION & PURPOSE

As a leader, we often find ourselves telling people "what" to do.  Even our Team Members all know that to run a successful business there are certain tasks and responsibilities that need to be done every day.  However, your team is looking for so much more from you.  They want to know what they do matters, that they are part of a bigger purpose besides selling chicken.

Think through the following questions:

  • Can you think of a time where you were motivated to accomplish a goal?  How did having a clear "why" motivate you to accomplish that goal?

  • What are the challenges of a team that doesn't have a clear purpose and vision?  How can that make you role more difficult as a leader?

  • Do you personally think about how you are part of a bigger vision at Chick-fil-A Southroads?  Why or why not?  What could you do to get more connected with the vision of our business?

Our vision at Chick-fil-A Southroads is "to have a POSITIVE INFLUENCE on all who come into contact with Chick-fil-A."  We do this by focusing on four pillars of our business including our PRODUCT, our PEOPLE, our PARTNERSHIP with the community, and our PROFITABILITY.  If our vision our "WHY" then our pillars are our "HOW."  They guide our actions in our business to ensure we are having a positive influence on those we serve each day.

Think through the following questions:

  • Identify one way in which you have seen us have a Positive Influence in each pillar of our business (Product, People, Partnership, Profitability)?

  • Is there one pillar within our vision that you think you currently have more influence?

  • Is there one pillar within our vision that you think you could learn more about or have more influence?

TAKE ACTION

Like a cup with a hole in the bottom...vision leaks!  It isn't something that is shared once and then remains forever engrained in your team's minds.  It is something we have to talk about all the time and ultimately that you as a leader have to share and model each and every day.  If you are passionate about our vision, not only will you be more excited about your work at Chick-fil-A, but your team will be more engaged in helping you achieve your goals as well.  Try to see if you can take a step forward in each one of these pillars of our business over the course of the next month.

  • Product – Take your break with a team member and order and evaluate some food, observe the customer service, and the restaurant environment.  Have a conversation about how doing the right thing, the right way, every time can make a huge impact on your guests visiting.  Don't just talk generically, but get specific.  What if you were on a date with a daughter/son that you haven't seen all week because of a work trip, what if you had just gotten a bad diagnosis from the hospital and were getting a bite to eat before you went home, what if you have been driving in the car 5 hours and were just trying to get a break before driving 5 more hours?

  • People – Take time to learn our Employee Promise.  As an organization we are committed to these promises, however, most Team Members will base their feelings of the Employee Promise based on their interactions with their leaders.  Are you bought into delivering theses experiences for our team?

  • Partnership with our Community – Take some time to explore our team member website and learn about all the opportunities team members have to give back to their community through Chick-fil-A.  Tell one team member about the ways they can serve or about how their efforts made a difference in one of our local donations this week.

  • Profitability – Being a profitable business allows us to reinvest back into our product, our people, and our partnerships in the community.  Ask a Director to sit down with you and share our business scorecard.  Ask questions to see where are some opportunities you can help impact our profitability.
